Like T-Boz, I have struggled with alot of nay sayers when dealing with my battle with Sickle Cell Anemia.  Having been wrote off as someone who wouldn’t live past the age of 30, would not be able to have any children, and would never live a full-filled life… we both as many many others have proved time and time again that doctors can be wrong.  My own grandfather who had sickle cell anemia died at the age of 72.  Very blessed.  So, I was too excited when I heard T-Boz of TLC whom is one of the few celebrity advocates for the disease, take the time out to talk with CNN’s Dr. Sunjay Gupta about her own situation and her personal battles.

In part, she shared:

“I grew up singing in church with my mother but I always had the same dream and I would see myself in baggy pants, running from the left side of the stage bending down to the right shaking someone’s hand, and a whole bunch of people are screaming for me. In my heart and until this day, I really believed it.”

“Doctors, they didn’t give me a very happy ending. You won’t live past 30, you’ll be disabled your whole life. You’ll never have kids. I was looking around the room like, ‘I don’t know who he’s talking to because that’s not my story.”

I had previously heard about Tionne having to also have brain surgery after finding out she had a benign brain tumor, and she touches on that topic as well in the interview.  She mentioned that…

“I started having headaches, but they were so frequent, something was wrong. My doctor called, but his voice sounded funny. And I said, ‘You’re gonna say something like I have a brain tumor, right?’ He got quiet .”
